Since its establishment in 2007, the Wakulla County Coalition for Youth (WCCY) has become a beloved pillar of our community. We occupy a unique and cherished space in the hearts of our residents. Recognizing the elevated risks of substance dependence in adulthood associated with early alcohol use in youth, WCCY is dedicated to guiding our young individuals towards making positive and health-conscious life choices. Our journey commenced with a fundamental yet impactful objective: uniting community partners and resources and fostering the sharing of information that supports the growth and well-being of the incredible youth in Wakulla. With representation across the 12 member partner sectors, WCCY collaborates seamlessly to achieve this shared mission.
The impactful benefits of WCCY are evident through the empowerment of young people, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. Their active involvement in community initiatives and decision-making brings diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to address challenges. Our advocacy efforts focus on raising awareness, mobilizing support, and influencing policies that meet the needs of both young people and the broader community, actively contributing to a more dynamic, skilled, and closely-knit community. We firmly believe in the transformative power of community involvement and collaboration as the key to building a brighter future for our youth and enhancing the overall well-being of our community.
WCCY has a rich history in our community. WCCY and its dedicated partners played a leading role in addressing community concerns, particularly youth substance use, showcasing a steadfast commitment to well-being. Actively engaged in diverse events like festivals and parades, WCCY focused on supporting families, as seen in initiatives like Empty Bowls, which brought the community together and raised funds for food-related charities. The positive impact of WCCY was evident through the Tobacco Free Partnership grant under the Tobacco Free Florida program, safeguarding Wakulla residents from tobacco hazards and creating a healthier community.
With grant support, WCCY member partners launched the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) group, uniting the community through advocacy and education, fostering a tobacco-free environment in Wakulla County. The transformative Florida Ounce of Prevention Grant (2008 - 2018) turned the community center into a comprehensive resource hub, that showcased an innovative approach to development that ensures efficient access to resources, fostered meaningful connections, and contributed to the overall well-being of the community.
WCCY is a proud recipient of the CDC Drug-Free Communities Grant. Partnering with FSU's Florida Center for Prevention Research (FCPR),
WCCY will focus on fortifying defenses against youth substance abuse and negative impacts on youth outcomes. Through educational and community-driven strategies across various domains, such as health, media relations, education, and religious organizations, this grant will provide the WCCY with valuable funding that will further our commitment to preventing youth substance use in Wakulla County.
