Since 2007, the Wakulla County Coalition for Youth (WCCY) has been an important part of our community, with a special place in the hearts of many. We know how early alcohol use can increase the risk of substance dependence later in life, and that’s why we’re so passionate about helping our youth make healthy, positive choices. Our journey began with a simple goal: bringing together community partners, sharing resources, and exchanging information to support the growth and well-being of Wakulla’s amazing young people. Today, with representation from 12 partner sectors, we’re working together to keep that mission alive.
WCCY has been a big part of our community for a long time. They've been at the forefront of tackling issues like youth substance use, showing a strong commitment to everyone’s well-being. They’re always out and about at local events like festivals and parades, and they really focus on supporting families. One example is the Empty Bowls initiative, which not only brought people together but also raised money for food charities.
Their work with the Tobacco Free Partnership grant under the Tobacco Free Florida program has made a big difference, helping to protect our community from tobacco-related problems and promoting a healthier lifestyle. With support from grants, WCCY member partners launched the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) group, which has been great for rallying the community around advocacy and education for a tobacco-free environment.
The Florida Ounce of Prevention Grant from 2008 to 2018 was another game-changer. It helped turn the community center into a one-stop resource hub, making it easier for people to access support, build connections, and improve overall well-being. WCCY’s innovative approach has really made a positive impact on our community.
We know that when youth get involved in community projects and decision-making, they bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions to the table. We're all about raising awareness, getting people on board, and pushing for policies that benefit youth, which in turn benefits the whole community. We truly believe that working together and getting everyone involved is the key to a brighter future for our young people and a stronger, more connected community.
In 2023, WCCY became the proud recipient of a CDC Drug-Free Communities Grant. Partnering with FSU's Florida Center for Prevention Research (FCPR), WCCY will focus on fortifying defenses against youth substance abuse and negative impacts on youth outcomes. Through educational and community-driven strategies across various domains, such as health, media relations, education, and religious organizations, this grant will provide WCCY with valuable funding that will further our commitment to preventing youth substance use in Wakulla County.
